I lost Sam today. I had always seen evidence of coyotes around the property but I had never actually seen one. I always thought that the dogs and donkeys kept them at bay. I had lost chickens in the past and thought it was a fox. I had seen foxes around and there are plenty of rabbits to keep them fed. But today the coyote came into the paddock - there is video evidence. It chased Half-n-half out and he started running down the driveway - smart boy. I got him, thanks to my brother in law letting me know. But I was too late to save Sam. I am broken hearted - he and I were very connected. From the time he was a baby - he used to sit on my shoulder, would come when I called and treated me like I was his hen. I will miss him dearly and am sorry I couldn't protect him. No more free ranging for the birds. Rest in peace Sam-I-am.
